Paper Mache Workshop: Daydreaming Alebrijes

May 7, 2022 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm

Registration here

Ana Gabriela Lopez will introduce you to the magic world of alebrijes and their origins. Alebrijes are figurines of imaginary animals and one of the most popular representations of Mexican Folk Art.

We will build a simplified alebrije from scratch using only white glue, newspaper, and masking tape. Afterwards, we will paint it with acrylic paints, decorate it, and add the varnish.

About the artist:

Ana Gabriela Lopez Castro is an active exponent of Mexican art and culture throughout the presentation of her artistic and handcrafted work known as the Alebrijes, fantastic figures created of paper maché.

Her artistic formation started in the areas of photography and printmaking in 2000, where she first found the best way to express her voice. In 2019, she founded Emotionart collective art group to bring intergenerational art workshops to Toronto community housing buildings, initially for seniors to break the isolation they may be experiencing, and to rebuild their communities again.
